Daniel Day-Lewis channels Lincoln in the first poster for Steven Spielberg’s epic

The publicity engine for Steven Spielberg’s hotly anticipated Lincoln is slowly starting to warm up. A couple of weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly debuted the first look of Daniel Day-Lewis as Honest Abe, and today, Dreamworks has debuted the film’s poster. Posters are usually followed by a trailer so don’t be surprised to see a trailer pop up sometime this week or before the end of the month. Based on Kearns Goodwin’s critically acclaimed biography Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, Spielberg’s film will focus on the last few months of Lincoln’s life, the abolishing of slavery and the end of the Civil War.

In an interview with Empire, Spielberg said that he planned to show, “Lincoln at work, not just Lincoln standing around posing for the history books…arguably the greatest working President in American history doing some of the greatest work for the world.” Spielberg said, “…what permanently ended slavery was the very close vote in the House of Representatives over the 13th Amendment – that story I’m excited to tell.”

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning, Emmy and Tony-winning playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner (who also wrote Spielberg’s Munich), Lincoln features a stacked cast that includes Sally Field,   Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, John Hawkes, James Spader, Jared Harris, Jackie Earle Haley, Walter Goggins and Lee Pace.

Lincoln opens on November 9.
