30 for 30: Sideways (2004)

These mid-2000 years are the hazy ones so sorry if I sound like I’m reaching. In March, I met Gabe and Erika (Chancy) at an SPC meeting. Apparently this was a month after they began dating. Perhaps the only milestone of 2004 was that I turned 21. The birthday was definitely a memorable one and the less said about it the better. 😛 Matthew Gonsalves can attest to that. Speaking of whom… this was the summer where I met and roomed with Matt at FIU, visited Houston to see my high school bud Roosevelt, and met Mr. FIU, Vijay Pradeep who was the big man on campus! To this day I’m amazed at the number of people he knows. Oh, on a slightly sour note… I also visited Halloween Horror Nights for the first time that year and had to endure it alongside three of the foulest people on Earth. I dislike HHN because of them so… Thanks foul people!

Moving on to lighter things… 2004 was a fantastic year for movies, between Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Incredibles, Collateral, Million Dollar Baby, Spider-Man 2, The Aviator, Before Sunset among others. However, my number one pick wasn’t a difficult one. I fell in love with SIDEWAYS from the day I watched it. Although I’d never dub myself a wine connoisseur or anything remotely close, I think I’m pretty certain Alexander Payne’s film played a part in turning me on to Pinot Noir. Unlike Giamatti’s Miles though, I do love me some Merlot.

About 30-for-30

Movies are a huge part of my life – I mean, why else would I be running a blog/site devoted to movies? To commemorate the occasion of my 30th birthday (later this month), I’ll be counting down to the big day by posting a photo of my favorite movie for each year of the last 30 years I’ve survived on this planet. These aren’t my favorite 30 movies EVER but merely the movie I consider my favorite (or the best) of each year. This is my 30 for 30. Click here to see the other 30 for 30 posts.
