Trailer: “X-Men: Days of Future Past” trailer emphasizes character over action

Twentieth Century Fox has released the first teaser trailer for one of my most anticipated movies of next summer: X-Men: Days of Future Past, the seventh film in their flagship X-Men franchise. Bryan Singer, who directed the first two (and most critically acclaimed) installments of the franchise (X-Men, X2) is returning to the director’s chair.

Based on Days of Future Past, one of the most famous story arcs in the X-Men comic series, the ambitious ensemble thriller will unite key players from the original trilogy as well as the fantastic 2009 reboot X-Men: First Class to tell a story that will blend time-travel elements with the franchise’s recurring social themes. Going off this somber teaser trailer, you can tell that Singer and company are putting together something that’ll be much more than explosions, although those looking for their mutant-on-mutant battles will likely get their share of thrills too.

Original trilogy cast members appearing in the film include Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Halle Berry (Storm), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde), Anna Paquin (Rogue) and Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) while Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James MacAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast) will be the ensemble returning from First Class.

The official plot description is as follows:

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens on May 23, 2014.
